The way organisations approach uniforms is rapidly changing. No longer just about how they look or perform, the focus is also on the footprint they leave behind. From the design studio to their final wear, uniforms go through an entire journey, one that can have a lasting environmental impact if not managed thoughtfully.

As businesses embrace their responsibility to operate sustainably, uniforms have become part of the bigger conversation. Whether you’re introducing a refreshed range or phasing out older styles, managing preloved uniforms is key to reducing textile waste. Partnering with a B Corp–certified supplier like Total Image (Total Image) means you’re working with a team that truly understands clothing circularity, and how to turn old uniforms into positive change.

Why Preloved Uniforms Matter

In Australia alone, over 501 million kilograms of textiles and clothing are discarded every year (Imroz Khan, Wang & Padhye, 2023), much of it ending up in landfill. Among the waste are uniforms that, once worn or outdated, are often thrown away without a second thought. With synthetic fibres, brand markings, and high turnover in some roles, these pieces are often destined for landfill.

Managing preloved uniforms addresses these challenges head-on, helping businesses lower waste, reduce emissions, and support a circular economy.

Design with the End in Mind

Sustainability in uniforms doesn’t look the same for every business. For some, it starts with lower-impact fabrics like recycled polyester or organic cotton. For others, it’s about going further, embracing uniform upcycling initiatives that give garments a valuable second life.

At Total Image, we design with purpose from day one—balancing style, function, and environmental responsibility. As a proud B Corp, we make sure uniform programs deliver a positive impact at every stage. How Managing Preloved Uniforms Is Helping Close the Loop

When uniforms are tossed in general waste, they contribute to textile pollution, releasing dyes, chemicals, and microfibres into the environment, where they can linger for centuries. Uniform recycling programs for businesses help close that loop.

Revamping Uniforms with Purpose

When Fantastic Furniture introduced its refreshed uniform range, Total Image worked with UPPAREL to ensure the old garments didn’t go to waste. Together, over 500 kilograms of textiles were diverted from landfill, preventing around 1,500 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions.

Many of Total Image’s partners go a step further, pairing recycling with uniform upcycling initiatives. For example, by removing branded elements, Total Image repurposes garments for donation to community shelters—diverting up to 2,250 kilograms of greenhouse gases while supporting those in need.

Empowering a Culture of Responsibility

Even the most well-designed uniform recycling programs won’t succeed without a culture that supports it. That’s why education and engagement are key. When teams understand the impact of managing preloved uniforms, they’re far more likely to return, recycle and support the journey toward circularity.
